Real Internet Competition Strategies: Standing on the competition.

In an earlier post, I wrote about attending the Position Front Page Bangkok Conference.

Being an SEO geek, I’d been hanging out to hear people talk about SEO for months.

So I returned from the conference and punched out a blog post titled “Bangkok Position Front Page SEO Conference”

A week later, in the Google search window, I Typed “Position Front Page Bangkok” or “Position Front Page”

Who’s on top? Not them.

So effectively, I can assume that anyone searching for their SEO Firm, is going to find mine also. There is no nasty business involved. They are a good SEO Company. It’s Just Business and how the technology works. My Site, although spartan in design, has sweet sweet SEO Power.

You can see how this opens up a plethora of opportunities for organisations to gain search exposure on a variety of different issues, just by Blogging.

Cutting Edge SEO? Was in 2002.
But I thought it would be nice to show the Bangkok Business community an example of it in action.

A great display of the power of Content Management Systems and content production to gain search ranking on-the-fly or as an organic process intertwined with the day to day running of your business.

Two words of advice Position Front Page.

1. Word.
2. Press.

Position Front Page Bangkok Conference

I was invited to attend a SEO conference hosted by Bangkok SEO firm Position Front Page. I’ve been eager to attend SEO events in Asia for a while so I went along to the Bangkok Conrad Hotel to see what it was all about.

It was a really nice event. Canapé’s and finger foods and the such.

The director of Position Front Page Archie Glikakis spoke about SEO at the conference titled “Internet competition strategies”.

I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to more conferences in Asia.

There was Search Engine Strategies China 07? How about 08?

Let me know SES folk, I’ll be your first delegate.

Putting Phuket business on the map.

Results are in from my latest consultation for a company in Phuket. The company is a language school and TEFL certificate provider that are hoping to expand rapidly throughout Asia. The company had contracted other SEO firms in hopes of getting a solid position on the front page. Time went by. Nothing. They lingered on between Page 2 and Page 5.

They contacted me a few weeks ago and we negotiated a 20 hour contract. I made some changes to elements on the site that were holding them back. In this case there were problems with how the site was linked to the index.html file.

Next, a super search friendly custom wordpress install.

Within 10 days, from page 5 to Page 1 position 3. Cutting through the competition like a hot knife through butter.

Gearing Up for Pro Audio Production

Just returned from a trip to Singapore where I geared up with the latest sound toys for pro audio production.
Content development should be the cornerstone of any SEO campaign. This is not just something the Guru is preaching! I can actually help you produce it!

At the heart of the Guru’s audio production setup is the highest quality firewire interface produced by RME-Audio Germany. The RME Fireface 800 has enough I/O to record an orchestra playing together with another orchestra!

Also armed with a range of professional recording mics suitable for any situation.

Looking forward to working with companies, getting creative and spicing up website content so that your visitors have got something interesting to view.

Acts of espionage in the Thailand SEO scene.

I recently did a 5 day SEO boot camp with a client in the adventure tourism industry. We did a lot of code updates to their site, worked on some link building and installed a CMS. The results were instant and as they had little to no SEO work done before. They jumped from an average of page 18 to page 2 - 3 by the end of our 5 day session.

So a week after I had left, their site disappeared again. Mysterious. When you have done SEO for a few years, you start to get a feeling of where things should sit. This didn’t sit right.Acting on an inkling the first thing I checked was the robots.txt.

There was the answer.

User-agent:
*Disallow: /

This basically blocks all web spiders from visiting all pages and directories on your web server. It seemed that someone the company had an association with had put this file on the web server to maliciously remove them from the search results.

A classic disgruntled ex employee move. Someone who knows a little about SEO and wants to do you wrong. Nasty business.

I know the business world is competitive, as is the world of SEO but that was a little too much.I shot the client and email and we altered the file the next day.

Things to take from this experience.

- Change server passwords frequently.
- Do a monthly check of the site. Things like robots.txt, server logs, webmaster diagnostics reports to make sure everything is in good order.

More Information Resources:
- A little bit of Information from Google about using a robots.txt file.
- The Wiki on the Robots Exclusion Standard- Official robots.txt website

SEO Guru Issues Warning to Bangkok Business

Bangkok, Thailand January 10th 2008

SEO Guru issues warning to Bangkok businesses to beware of firms offering quick and easy gains to websites search results ranking.

Today Asia’s self proclaimed SEO Guru issued a warning to businesses operating in Bangkok Thailand. The Guru urged companies to beware of SEO firms offering quick and easy gains to their websites search position on the Google search engine.

SEO has become a booming industry in recent years as companies realise the importance of their websites position on the Google search engine. The rapid growth of the industry has seen SEO firms springing up world wide. Despite the growing dollar value of the SEO industry, it remains unregulated by any standards body.

The Guru Said “I’ve seen numerous Bangkok companies choose the wrong SEO path and it can end up being detrimental to their business. ”

There have been a number of high profile cases where companies have been penalised by Google for employing inappropriate SEO techniques, including the German automotive giant BMW who had one of their sites completely removed from the Google index.

When asked about the potential consequences of choosing the wrong SEO firm the Guru said “I’ve seen multi million dollar e-commerce businesses have their sites completely wiped from the search results. That’s a worst case scenario. I’ve also seen a lot of businesses in Bangkok have their websites code degraded and the appearance of their website destroyed by SEOs that really didn’t know what they were doing.”

The Google Corporation have numerous outlets to inform business owners and web developers about search engine best practices. Despite Google’s policy of informing the web development and business community about SEO best practices, many SEO firms flaunt these guidelines.

The SEO Guru offered some advice for organisations who are looking to contract a SEO firm in Bangkok.

1. Read Google’s recommendations on contracting a SEO
2. Don’t contract a SEO who only claims to do SEO, contract a SEO firm with a background in web development and other marketing disciplines.
3.Cast your net wide. Beware of firms promising fast gains for a hand full of specific search terms.
4. Always ask your SEO to explain what they are doing and why.

A long leisurely stroll down the wrong SEO path.

I’ve seen it happen to more than one business. Sometimes its their own doing. Sometimes they are led astray by unqualified and less than professional SEOs.

Long leisurely strolls down the wrong SEO path. It can be detrimental to business to say the least.

It’s especially difficult for organisations in Bangkok. Bangkok is not a city known for regimentation and order. So when a Bangkok based business has to come to grips with SEO, a discipline not so orderly in itself, chaos can ensue.

The most recent case I have seen is a Bangkok based corporation that entrusted the optimisation of their website to an enthusiastic local SEO firm. Code was “optimised”, all optimisations degraded the quality of the site in terms of usability, aesthetics, web standards etc…. And the response from the SEO firm…….”We can’t change it, we have to wait 4 months for Google to process the changes” Ouch……Burnt…. The negative concequesnces of degradations in website quality, falling search positions, or even being removed from the Google index go without mentioning. Even deeper though are the consequences of finding your organisation in the wrong SEO frame of mind. I’ve heard more than one CEO or business person rebuke SEO as an industry entirely. They had been burned as well.

Good SEO should have the technical issues well under wraps. Web standards and quality development should be a given. Instead of reducing SEO to code tinkering and trickery that leaves the CEO a nervous wreck as they watch their website crumble, it should be an transformative experience. One that shifts an organisation from worrying about its website and its search position, to one that is focused on producing quality content for their site.

Essentially spilling the core story of their business out on to the internet each and every day.

It’s these organisations that are winning the top search positions, and ones that can addapt to this model will win them in the future.

Choosing a SEO In Bangkok

After being in and out of Bangkok boardrooms the last few months speaking to organisations about their SEO needs, I’ve been able to get a feel for the issues a business needs to consider when choosing a SEO in Bangkok. Even though SEO is often considered a dark art, many of the technical issues are not difficult to grasp.

Instead of choosing a quick fix solution, business should have a broader vision when it comes to their website and their SEO needs.

Ask…

1. Is your SEO empowering your organisation?
Your SEO should be able to offer you cold hard data about your sites traffic and how their efforts are influencing it. Your SEO should be able to explain what they are doing and why. Most SEO strategies are just common sense and should resonate when explained. Beware the smoke and mirrors treatment.

2. Does your SEO have a vision for your organisations future?
It’s easy to reduce SEO to a handful of technical factors that effect your websites ranking. It’s easy to try an influence these factors. A good SEO should weave their knowledge of the technical issues around broader communications strategies that will establish your organisations website as a leader in the industry.

3. Only Optimise?
Tweaks and optimisations will only take you so far. Will your SEO make your website grow? Short term quick fix SEO may bring some results in the short term, but such approaches won’t last long.

Alt tags alone are not strategy.
